Bees-Wax
Show:
Bees-wax has been used since ancient times with traces being found in the paintings in the Lascaux cave as well as in Egyptian mummies. The Egyptian peoples also utilised bees-wax in shipbuilding.

During the Roman Empire, bees-wax was used as a waterproofing agent for painted walls and with added pigments was the medium for the Fayum Mummy Portraits. It is even reported that nations subjugated by Rome sometimes paid tributes or taxes in bees-wax. In the Middle Ages bees-wax was considered valuable enough to become a form of currency.

More recently bees-wax has found many uses including:
  • A modeling material
  • A component of many polishes
  • Candles
  • Pharmaceuticals including bone wax
  • As food agent E901 (Glazing Agent)
  • In cosmetics
